udev manager determines how network interfaces should be named.
Predictable Network Interface Names
First udev starts with a two character prefix based on the type of interface.
- en for ethernet (LAN)
- wl for wireless LAN ((WLAN))
- ww for wireless wide access network (WWAN)
- lo for loopback
- br for bridge
- fw for firewire
- st for tunneling IPv4 to IPv6 standard, vice versa
- gi for generic tunneling
- vm for virtual machines
Then additionally one of the following is appended:
- o<onboard_index_#>
- s<hotplug_slot_#>fd<device_id>
- x
- Ppsfd<device_id>
APPLE
- awdl for apple wireless direct link
- p2p0 for AirDrop
- gif for unencrypted tunnel
- gre for unencrypted tunnel
