Steam

Setup Steam for use on a Synology NAS ( technically any system but we gonna focus on Windows)
This will create an iSCSI, that a computer will treat as an internal HD even though it is actually connect via LAN.
It may be too slow for some games so just try them and if one give trouble you can always move it back locally.
Table of Contents
A few times now some of the settings have changed. As of the date of this writing
Synology incorporated iSCSI into the SAN Manager and Steam changed how to move games. A few min recommendations:
- A 10GB LAN Connection
- SSD/NVME drives if possible.
- Place non-intensive apps on iSCSI
- Keep Environment games local.
Synology
First thing it to create some space by adding a LUN (Logical Unit Number) on the NAS.
Then we will use the LUN as an iSCSI (Internet Small Computer Systems Interface) target.
- Launch SAN Manager
- Click on LUN
- Name: Steam
- Volume 1
- Capacity:
- Thick Provisioning
- Create new iSCSI target
- Permissions: Allow All R/W
Now Proceed to Windows/Linux/Mac
Network
My Nas has a firewall actove, so we need to allow Port 3260.
- Control Panel > Security > Firewall > Firewall Profile > Edit Rules
- Create > Set from a list of built-in apps > iSCSI service > Ok + Apply
Windows
We are going to use ISCSI Initiator to Network Map
- Discovery Tab
- Discover Portal
- Enter IP of NAS, leave port at 3260
- Targets Tab
- Select synology target
- Click connect
Next, open Computer Management to label and format new drive.
- Go to Disk Management
- Select Disk <#> to initialize
- Keep as GPT
- Below should now show the unallocated volume
- Right Click - New Simple Volume
- Next - Give all the space
- Assign Drive Letter
- Next - NTFS
- Give new volume label name
- Perform Quick Format (no compression)
Move onto Steam
Steam
Start out Steam > Settings > Storage
- Select Add Drive and add it.
- Use Hamburger to set default drive. (Any new install will list drive option)
- Below is the list of installed games
- Select them to either uninstall or move
That’s it! Enjoy your new massive volume!
